Disclaimer: Peru was my first time third-world traveling, back in 2015. I kept this post short, without too much information since much of it won’t be applicable anymore. I suggest you fact check before making any plans.
I was in Peru for a short trip over Pesach in 2015. I only visited Cusco and Machu Pichu.
I flew there a few days before Pesach and worked remotely from there. The internet wasn’t that great though I imagine it has improved since.
Activities
Tip #1: Don’t book activities through TripAdvisor or any websites unless you want to be majorly ripped off. Instead, find out who are the current agencies that Israilis use and book through them.
Cusco is a lovely town and fun to explore. Like many Spanish inspired towns, it has Plaza des Armes which is always an experience. During my time there, there were several festivals and parades which are a true sight. That’s also the area of many agencies and souvenir shops.
Toda Matana is a popular souvenir shop with great prices. You can bargain on most items and on the total. The owners speak Hebrew and are frequented by Israelis.
I also joined a tip-base walking tour which gave me great knowledge and history of Cusco.
There are loads of activities to do in Cusco. I loved horseback riding and did that twice! You can also do Ziplining, trips to Rainbow Mountains, Salt Flats, Inca Ruins and more.
Machu Pichu
TIP #2: In my opinion, The best time to visit Machu Pichu is early in the morning when the clouds are wandering over the mountains. It is an incredible experience and you can feel the clouds envelop and pass over you. Also, you avoid the hot sun exposure that comes later in the day. You will need to stay in Sguas Calientes the night before, to ensure an early start to you day.
Many people go to Machu Pichu as part of a few day trek along the Inca trail or other treks. As mentioned above, fact check your quotes prices.
Chabad
The Chabad in Cusco is phenomenal. Last I heard, they have a meat restaurant, a dairy restaurant and a restaurant that opens at midnight called “Munch” (use your imagination 😊). They have Jewish services, Shabbat meals, and Chagim. They are somewhat seasonal and generally close after Sukkot until Purim time.
